    abstract:
Acquiring city development situations at long time series is meaningful for rational planning of the city and resolving urbanization issues. The Operational Line Scan System(OLS) sensor aboard on the Defence Meteorological Satellite Program(DMSP) can acquire night time light image at long time series. Taking typical cities of Shanxi Province(Taiyuan City, Datong City, and Yuncheng City) as the research regions, this research analysed the spatial distribution change of brightness value for DMSP/OLS data at five years period from 1992 to 2013, so as to understand the development progress during the past 20 years for the three cities. Research results show: Taiyuan City has the strongest economic foundation, and presents continuous quick developing speed, so it is the city with the strongest and best developing trend city; Datong City has less economic foundation, which develops slowly in the previous three periods, but starts fast development in the latter two periods; Yuncheng City has the least economic foundation, but presents a developing tendency with continuous fast speed, and thus has the quickest development speed in the three cities.
