    abstract:
    The status quo of the research on the face instability mechanism of shield tunnel is reviewed. The key issue of soil arching effect during shield tunnel face instability is discussed. The face instability mechanism of shield tunnel includes the face instability process, modes, and models. The soil arching effect during face instability of shield tunnel focuses on the evolution of soil arching during face instability process and the face instability models considering the soil arching effect. The directions and suggestions for further research are proposed including the face instability mechanism based on the time-spatial change laws of three-dimensional earth pressure, the evolution laws of spatial three-dimensional soil arching during face instability process, and the evolution laws of spatial physical arch and corresponding applications of limit face supporting pressure calculation method.
